A Look at Double-Pane Window Discoloration

Window replacement contractors know that double-pane windows are one of the most important inventions in the history of home construction and improvement. Windows are often the weak link in the thermal envelope of a building, but with double-pane, gas-filled windows, that has changed.

These windows are not immune to problems, though. One of the most common issues is discoloration. This can mean the window is damaged.

What Does Window Discoloration Look Like?

You might find streaks on the surface of the window. There are different colors of mildew and mold, and one or several may appear on a damaged window. The dark streak may not be wet to the touch.

What Causes Window Discoloration?

Moisture. It’s highly likely that there is a high level of humidity in your home, a high level of humidity outside your home, and the air exchange rate in your home; that is, the speed at which the damp air indoors is replaced by fresh air. Not only does this cause discoloration, but it can also cause other problems like mold growth, wood rot and allergic reactions.

Should You Replace Your Windows?

It’s highly unlikely that you can get rid of the stains, so call your window installers to replace your windows. Don’t try to repair the windows yourself. Ask your window contractors about discoloration-resistant window film.

However, while replacing your windows can take care of the stain problem, it’s not permanent. If your windows are not the only ones causing the moisture problem in your home, your new windows will stain again over time. It’s advisable to have your home audited for any air leaks or thermal bridging to take care of the issue once and for all.
