First Contact

The homeowner contacted Austin Pro in May 2023 through a neighbor's referral after discovering extensive hail damage from recent storms. Their initial concern focused on working with their insurance company to document the damage properly and ensure complete restoration coverage. We scheduled an immediate assessment to evaluate the roof condition and coordinate with their insurance adjuster.

Evaluation

Our comprehensive roof inspection revealed widespread hail impact damage across the entire shingle system, with significant granule loss and exposed mat areas that compromised weather protection. The damage patterns were consistent with the severe weather event that affected much of Northwest Austin, making complete replacement the most viable solution. We documented all findings for the insurance claim and developed a detailed scope for adjuster review.

PLanning & Approval

The insurance approval process extended through early 2024 as the adjuster reviewed documentation and confirmed coverage for complete roof replacement. Once approved in March 2024, we finalized material selections with GAF Timberline HDZ shingles and coordinated the full system approach needed for Golden Pledge warranty coverage. Material ordering and crew scheduling aligned for optimal spring installation timing.

Installation

Installation began with complete tear-off and disposal of existing materials, followed by systematic installation of the GAF roofing system including synthetic underlayment, ice and water shield, and Timberline HDZ shingles. Our crews carefully detached and reset the existing gutters while incorporating new flashing and ventilation components. The work progressed efficiently despite coordination requirements for the comprehensive system installation.

Completion

The final walkthrough in May 2024 revealed a complete roofing system engineered for Central Texas conditions, with GAF's Golden Pledge warranty providing comprehensive coverage for both materials and workmanship. The homeowner gained peace of mind knowing their roof could handle future Austin weather extremes while maintaining energy efficiency and curb appeal. Final invoicing and project closeout occurred in June 2024.

Storm Recovery in Northwest Hills

When severe weather swept through Austin's Northwest Hills neighborhood, this homeowner discovered what many in our area face each storm season — significant hail damage that compromised their roof's integrity. The insurance adjuster confirmed extensive impact damage across the existing composition shingle system, making a complete roof replacement the only viable solution. The timing couldn't have been more critical, with Central Texas's intense summer heat and afternoon thunderstorms approaching.

The homeowner reached out through a referral from satisfied neighbors, understanding that insurance restoration projects require contractors experienced in working directly with adjusters and insurance requirements. The damaged roof showed classic signs of hail impact: granule loss, exposed mat, and compromised shingle integrity that would only worsen under Austin's punishing UV exposure and temperature swings.

Assessment and Insurance Coordination

Our initial evaluation revealed damage patterns consistent with the severe hail event that impacted much of Northwest Austin. The existing shingles showed significant granule displacement and multiple impact points that had compromised the protective surface. More concerning was the potential for water infiltration during future storms, especially given Austin's intense rainfall patterns that can dump several inches in short periods.

Working directly with the insurance adjuster, we documented every aspect of the damage and developed a comprehensive scope that would restore the roof to pre-loss condition while incorporating modern materials designed for Central Texas conditions. The insurance scope covered complete tear-off and replacement, recognizing that partial repairs wouldn't adequately address the widespread damage across the roof system.

GAF Timberline HDZ Selection

For this Northwest Hills home, we specified GAF Timberline HDZ architectural shingles, a premium product engineered specifically for severe weather regions like Central Texas. The HDZ line incorporates GAF's LayerLock technology, which mechanically bonds shingle layers for enhanced wind resistance — crucial for Austin's spring storm season when straight-line winds can exceed 70 mph.

The Timberline HDZ system offers several advantages for Austin homeowners. The StrikeZone nailing area provides 99.9% nailing accuracy, ensuring proper installation even in challenging conditions. The shingles' algae-resistant granules combat the moisture and humidity that can lead to unsightly streaking on roofs throughout Central Texas. Most importantly, the product qualifies for GAF's Golden Pledge warranty when installed as part of a complete system approach.

Complete System Installation

The installation began with complete removal and disposal of the existing composition shingles, a process that generated significant debris typical of full shingle roofing replacements. Our crews carefully protected the landscaping and property while systematically stripping the old materials down to the decking.

Over the prepared deck, we installed GAF FeltBuster synthetic underlayment across the entire 10-square roof area. This advanced underlayment provides superior protection compared to traditional felt, with enhanced tear resistance and weather protection during installation. In critical areas prone to ice damming and wind-driven rain, we applied GAF StormGuard ice and water shield, creating a fully adhered barrier that seals around nail penetrations.

The shingle installation process incorporated several key components for long-term performance. We began with 120 linear feet of GAF ProStart starter shingle strip along all eaves and rakes, ensuring proper overhang and wind resistance from the first course. The Timberline HDZ shingles were secured with 7,200 roofing coil nails sized at 1¼ inches for optimal penetration and holding power in Texas heat cycles.

Ventilation and Ridge Details

Proper attic ventilation becomes critical in Austin's climate, where summer temperatures routinely exceed 100°F and attic spaces can reach 150°F or higher. We installed GAF Cobra Rigid Vent 3 exhaust ridge vent across 4 linear feet of ridge line, providing continuous exhaust ventilation that works with existing soffit intake vents to create proper airflow.

The ridge system incorporated 33 linear feet of GAF Z-Ridge, which provides the finished appearance while accommodating the ventilation requirements. This combination ensures hot air can escape the attic space efficiently, reducing cooling loads and preventing moisture accumulation that can lead to decking problems in humid Central Texas conditions.

Flashing and Detail Work

Critical to any Austin roof installation is proper flashing around penetrations and transitions. We installed galvanized steel base pipe flashing around all plumbing penetrations, sized from 1½ to 3 inches to accommodate the home's various roof penetrations. The mill-finish galvanized steel provides corrosion resistance essential in our climate's humidity and occasional hail exposure.

New galvanized steel drip edge measuring 2"×2" was installed across 10 linear feet of critical areas, creating proper water shedding away from fascia boards and preventing the moisture infiltration that can damage wooden trim components. An Air Vent RVG-55 galvanized steel slant back box vent was incorporated to provide additional ventilation where needed.

Gutter Integration

The existing gutters required careful detachment and resetting to accommodate the new roofing materials and updated edge details. This process involves more than simple removal — proper gutter function depends on precise slope and positioning relative to the new drip edge configuration.

Our crews carefully documented the existing gutter positioning before removal, ensuring the reset installation would maintain proper drainage patterns. This attention to detail prevents the standing water issues that can lead to mosquito breeding and foundation concerns, both significant considerations for Austin-area homeowners.

Golden Pledge Warranty Protection

The completed installation qualified for GAF's Golden Pledge warranty, their most comprehensive coverage available only through Master Elite contractors using complete GAF roofing systems. This warranty provides non-prorated material coverage and includes workmanship protection, giving the homeowner confidence that their investment is protected against both material defects and installation issues.

For Austin homeowners, this level of warranty coverage proves especially valuable given our extreme weather patterns. The Golden Pledge warranty covers wind damage up to 130 mph when proper installation procedures are followed, providing protection that exceeds typical homeowner insurance deductibles for storm-related claims.

Project Timeline and Completion

The project timeline reflected both the insurance approval process and material coordination required for complete system installations. From the initial lead contact in May 2023 through insurance approval in March 2024, the homeowner worked through the typical insurance restoration timeline that many Austin residents experience after major storm events.

Actual installation was completed efficiently once materials were staged and weather conditions aligned. The final walkthrough revealed a roof system engineered for Central Texas conditions, with proper ventilation, enhanced wind resistance, and premium materials designed to withstand our challenging climate for decades to come.

Investment in Austin Home Protection

This Northwest Hills project demonstrates the value of comprehensive shingle roofing replacement when storm damage occurs. Rather than attempting piecemeal repairs, the insurance-covered replacement created an opportunity to upgrade to premium materials and modern installation techniques that provide enhanced protection against future weather events.

For Austin-area homeowners, the combination of GAF's proven materials, proper installation techniques, and comprehensive warranty coverage provides the peace of mind that comes with knowing your home's primary weather barrier can handle whatever Central Texas storms deliver. The investment in quality materials and professional installation pays dividends through energy efficiency, longevity, and reduced maintenance concerns in our demanding climate.
